5 houses in Phoenix, Arizona, where millennials are flocking and it's sunny 300 days a year
Insurance company Haven Life recently compiled a list of the top U.S. cities millennials are moving to and Phoenix, Arizona, clocked in at number 18. The desert city saw a 10 percent increase in its millennial population from 2012 to 2017. The Phoenix area has the benefit of a slightly more affordable housing market than some of the others on Haven Life's list—the Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale area has a median home price of $209,483—and a cost of living that's two percent lower than the national average, making it an attractive prospect for young families looking for a place to settle.
Affordability aside, there are lots of reasons Phoenix might appeal to New Yorkers looking to relocate. The city is full of beautiful places, like Camelback Mountain, which is one of the city's most scenic hiking spots, the Desert Botanical Garden, home to 50,000 desert plants, and the Salt River, which is a popular spot for tubing. Fans of dry weather will love Phoenix's arid climate, as the city averages only about eight inches of rain a year, and boasts about 300 days of sunshine.
There's an incredible food scene in Phoenix—there's some of the best and most authentic Mexican food in the country here, with standouts including Joyride Taco House, Gallo Blanco Cafe & Bar, and Taco Guild. And, of course, Phoenix houses are far more spacious and less pricey than what you'd find in Manhattan. If that sounds appealing, here's a taste of what's out there.
