Charleston, South Carolina oozes with southern charm. The port city was first founded by English settlers in 1670, making it one of the oldest cities in the U.S., and retains quite a few old-world touches, like cobblestone streets, elegant Federal and Victorian architecture, centuries-old churches (Charleston is nicknamed "Holy City," thanks to the city's founding principles demanding religious tolerance), and historic spots like Fort Sumter, where Confederate soldiers fired the Civil War's first shots.

Charleston residents also enjoy gorgeous, mild weather, in addition to three lovely beaches within about a half-hour's drive. The city's culinary scene is growing; there are lots of seafood and oyster eateries here, like hotspot 167 Raw and mainstay the Ordinary, along with iconic soul food spots (Nana's Seafood & Soul, Bertha's Kitchen) and other cafes and restaurants serving up classic southern fare. Charleston's beer scene is booming, with breweries like Holy City Brewing and COAST Brewing Company offering craft beers in fun taprooms, and there are plenty of cocktail bars, hip rooftops, and live music joints in town.

Best of all, Charleston's cost of living is much lower than New York's—about 40 percent less expensive, in fact—and a recent Wallethub ranking concluded Charleston was one of the best cities in the U.S. for first-time homeowners, thanks to its thriving real estate market and overall quality of life. If any of that sounds appealing to you, here's a taste of what's out there.
