New York City apartments are known for being small and if you’re moving into a studio apartment or a college dorm, you’ll have even less space to fit your furniture.

The solution is to shop for scaled-down or multi-use pieces that can help make the most of your limited square footage. Think tables with storage or swapping a loveseat for a couch. There are also companies where you can order custom furniture like couches with built-in storage and USB outlets.

Another option to maximize space: Murphy beds, a tried-and-true solution for New Yorkers with small apartments. They’ve come a long way in terms of design and features. You can find custom versions with desks, shelves, and storage. Interested? Check out our guide to Murphy beds for any budget.

So to help furnish your small New York City apartment (or dorm), here are five websites that sell pieces that are just the right fit and a few products to help with your search.

1) Burrow

Burrow sells customizable furniture made with sustainably sourced wood and scratch- and stain-resistant fabrics, according to its site. Items are designed to be put together (or taken apart) for moving. For small spaces, they offer different loveseat and storage options like the Block Nomad loveseat, $1,390, (above), which is available in five colors and six leg finishes. Shipping is free.

2) Coddle

Coddle launched in 2018 to sell furniture suitable for small spaces. Their flagship product is the toggle convertible couch shown above, which is currently on sale for $1,149. It can be configured as a couch or bed. It’s available in four colors and has two USB outlets. Check them out for couches, chairs, and bedroom furniture.

3) Resource Furniture

Resource designs scaled-down furniture like wall beds and cabinets with fold-up desks that are made to order and customizable. Products are available in multiple colors, finishes, and fabrics, so you have to request pricing. Resource also has virtual and in-person consultations, showrooms, and a blog if you need design inspiration.

You’ve undoubtedly heard of Pottery Barn, but what you might not know is that they sell furniture for small spaces. The office set above, $499, comes with the desk, shelf, and hardware in two colors. Also check out Pottery Barn Teen for pieces for small spaces (even if you’re beyond your teen years).
