For a ground-floor one-bedroom, even one in Chelsea, $7,000 per month seems rather steep—but this apartment, listed by Corcoran, comes with features that may make it attractive to high-rolling bachelors and bachelorettes. While living on the first floor can sometimes mean less light and more street noise, that's mitigated in this duplex by French doors that open onto a private garden, and romantic prewar details like crown moldings and two working fireplaces, making this an impressive place to entertain.

On the upper level, you'll find the living area (see main image), which opens onto the backyard; 11-foot ceilings make the space feel airy and expansive, and the marble mantle contrasts nicely with the dark wood floors. The galley kitchen includes pantry space for additional storage, and is equipped with stainless steel appliances and a mirrored backsplash.

The bedroom suite is on the lower level, where prewar details—like the exposed ceiling beams and brick fireplace—abound. There's also an entry to the garden here, and at the other end of the space, a spacious gallery complete with a wet bar and wine cooler, which should go a long way toward making an impression on guests. The en-suite bath has a convenient shelf—perhaps a place to rest a wine glass.

The back garden is landscaped and has room for seating, and high fences make the space private, all the better for that sense of sanctuary.
