Memorial Day weekend is almost here (our office is closed Monday) and if you’re like us, your mind is on summer vacations (sorry, boss). The weather looks stormy for the first part of the weekend (ugh) but you can make the most of it by planning a trip or weekend getaway for when (hopefully) skies will be clearer.

Below are five places you can book for a great escape nearby.

The Wick, Hudson, New York

This new hotel opened this week on the site of a former 1860s soap and candle factory. The 55-room hotel has a restaurant, a bar, a gym and an enclosed rooftop patio with views of the Catskill Mountains. It is a block from the Hudson Amtrak train station and rooms start at $179 per night.

The Asbury, Asbury Park, New Jersey

Honored last year by USA Today as the best new hotel in the U.S., The Asbury on the Jersey Shore aims for a mash-up of its Victorian-era origins and rock-'n'-roll locale. The 110-room hotel has a 4,300-square-foot rooftop bar that turns into a theater with movies projected onto a 20-foot wall. There’s a pool and ground floor lounge. Rooms start at $245 per night.

Surfin' Bird House, the Rockaways

Surfin’ Bird House is an example of what you can find on Airbnb for listings in surf-friendly Rockaway. This is a newly renovated apartment that sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms and has two bathrooms. According to the listing, it is two minutes from the beach and close to the A train at 98th Street as well as the ferry to lower Manhattan. It rents for $150 per night.

Kate's Lazy Meadow, Mount Tremper, New York

Owned by Kate Pierson of the B-52s, these are nine mid-century modern suites on the Esopus Creek, plus several rustic cabins, with full kitchens, all decorated by Pierson, in Mount Tremper, New York near Woodstock. Guests have access to a selection of rare and vintage films and Japanese-style hot plunge baths under the stars. Weekend summer rates start at $210.

Beach Plum Resort, Montauk, New York

Get a deal at the Beach Plum in Montauk in June: stay three nights and get the fourth night free. The boutique resort is across the street from the ocean, which you reach via a path lined with fragrant beach plums. These are condos for rent and there are studios, one and two bedrooms, and cottages with full kitchens and private decks. There’s also a heated pool, grills and a play area. Rates start at $139 per night.
