After my annual apple-picking trip with friends to Fishkill Farms, we drove 20 minutes to Newburgh, New York for dinner. The small city, located on the Hudson River, has become a popular place in recent years for New Yorkers looking to relocate somewhere more affordable. (It’s big turn around for the little city that over a decade ago was considered the murder capital of New York because of gang violence.)

Downtown, most of the stores and restaurants are along Broadway, Liberty and Water streets. Here you’ll find Liberty Street Bistro (that’s where my friends and I dined—try the green curry mussels, or steak frites), Ms. Fairfax, Hudson Taco, Captain Jakes, and a handful of stores and art galleries. There are also a few parks, a waterfront trail, and Hudson River sightseeing cruises. Nearby is Newburgh Mall and big-box stores like Target.

You’re also close to other popular Hudson Valley towns like Beacon, which you can get to via a ferry ride across the Hudson. It’s about an hour-and-a-half drive from NYC.

When it comes to buying a house here, the median sales price is $305,000, according to Realtor.com. Right now there are around 90 houses on the market. You can find houses close to downtown and in rural areas. There are also several older homes that need gut renovations if you’re looking for a fixer-upper.
