If you want to test out living in the suburbs before committing to homeownership, renting a house is the route to take. And if being within commuting distance to New York City is important, Suffolk County, New York, which is on Long Island, has options for most budgets.

Suffolk County is suburban and very spread out, so you will need a car to get around. However most areas are served by the Long Island Railroad for connections to New York City.

When you’re looking at listings for houses on line, search results may bring up vacation rentals with monthly rates that vary by the season. So for longer (and more affordable) leases, steer clear of vacation destinations—mainly the high-end enclaves on the East End and the North Fork.

Another consideration: Living in a house requires more hands-on responsibility than living in an apartment, so ask who maintains the yard, handles snow removal, makes repairs, and pays utilities.

To help with your search, here are five rentals in Setauket, West Islip, Huntington, Holbrook, and Remsenburg.

This three bedroom, three and a half bath is listed for $3,950 a month. The Colonial features hardwood and tile floors, built-ins, moldings, recessed lighting, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, a walk-in closet, heated garage, and a covered porch.
