This stunning Union Square penthouse comes with a private rooftop pool
In New York City, there are so many super high-end properties that they all tend to look alike and fail to seem exceptional. But this penthouse at 5 East 17th St., listed at $17 million stands out from the pack.
Aside from the sleek interior design, two private keyed elevator entrances, four exposures via 20 oversized windows, a screening area, and skylights throughout, this four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath apartment comes with 4,000 square feet of rooftop space with an outdoor kitchen, wet bar, and private pool.
The floor-through penthouse has 6,000 square feet of indoor space, providing plenty of room for living large. The living area has a 12-foot ceiling, a south-facing wall of windows with electronic shades, and a wood-burning fireplace.
In the photo above, the dining table is in what the description calls the screening area, which features a hidden 100-inch electronic screen, a custom coffered ceiling, and specialty lighting.
The dining area is open to the kitchen and sits under a 25-foot-high atrium with a 16-foot long skylight. In the photos, it’s set up as a second living room. The floating stairway to a two-tiered, limestone-clad roof deck has glass railings and its own lighting.
The Bakes & Kropp kitchen, with bleached walnut accents, has a Glassos island with seating for up to six; a Sub-Zero refrigerator, freezer, and wine cellar; Wolf eight-burner range with griddle, Miele coffee system, two Bosch dishwashers, and a windowed breakfast area.
The four bedrooms are located down a hallway from the kitchen, and each is en suite. The first bedroom (one of two masters) has two walk-in closets.
The fourth bedroom at the end of the hall houses the second keyed elevator. In the photos it is set up as a home office.
Each of the bathrooms for the master bedrooms have separate deep soaking tubs and showers.
The main roof deck, at 3,000 square feet, has a 20-foot stainless steel swimming pool with an Olympic-strength swim current and outdoor shower. There’s also a 1,000-square-foot sun deck on a second-tier.
The rooftop also features 16 walk-on skylights, a full-sized bar, a kitchen/barbecue, and landscaping throughout.
Along the wall of the living and screening room, bleached walnut woodwork conceals 20 feet of closet space, a full-sized laundry room, and a technology closet. Common charges are $2,977 a month; taxes are $5,544 a month.
The penthouse was created on the top of an historic loft building. It is located between Fifth Avenue and Union Square West, with myriad boutiques and top-rated restaurants nearby, and the famed Union Square Greenmarket a block away.
