Compass/StreetEasy

Buying an alcove studio in New York City gives you the best of both worlds: You’ll pay less than you would for a one bedroom—and you still get a separate sleeping space.

That’s because over the past year, the median sales price for studios is $250,000 less than the median price for one bedrooms, according to data from UrbanDigs, a real estate analytics firm. But you will have to do some searching: Only 271 of the 1,341 studios listed on StreetEasy feature an alcove.

You can also search for alcove studios with separate kitchens, private outdoor space, and foyers so you don’t feel like you’re living in just one room. There are also ways to arrange your furniture and multi-purpose furniture to maximize your space. And if you can’t find a studio with a sleeping alcove, check the building’s policy on installing temporary pressurized walls to create your own bedroom.

To help with your apartment search, here are five alcove studios for sale in Jackson Heights, Sutton Place, Battery Park City, Crown Heights, and Turtle Bay.
