This quirky Flatiron studio features a 'pod' designed by Jade Jagger
With an imposing “pod” that contains a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a closet, this $899,000 studio condo at 16 West 19th St. in the Flatiron District is, in a word, different.
That might be a good thing for some buyers, especially those who feel that their broker is showing them the same apartment over and over again and want something with a little more design cred.
The cube-shaped pod is the brainchild of Jade Jagger—Mick and Bianca’s designer daughter—and the reasoning behind it is simple, according to Compass broker Ian Slater.
“The pod was thought of as so many New Yorkers use NYC as their living room and dining room,” he says. “She thought, why not compartmentalize the kitchen, bathroom, and closet into a chic, design-oriented feature of the apartment, given that the building itself is so central. It also opened up the living space more so entertaining was easier in what is essentially a not-so-huge apartment.”
The pod will without a doubt be too weird for some, especially seeing as how it looks kind of like an afterthought—something vaguely futuristic that was plunked down into the loft space after someone suddenly realized that, oh no, the kitchen and/or bathroom is missing. But others will probably be crazy about it because of its inherent peculiarity.
At just 460-square-feet, the apartment is definitely on the small side, but 11-foot ceilings help combat that claustrophobic feel. There are wood floors throughout, and, as it’s currently configured, room for a bed, a desk, and a TV area with a couch, a coffee table, and a few chairs. That seating area is practically in the kitchen, so it might be wiser to try and make do with as little furniture as possible. There’s also central air-conditioning and an in-unit washer and dryer in a closet by the front door.
The microscopic pod kitchen is shiny and modern-looking, with a stainless steel fridge, a dishwasher, and a convection oven. There’s hardly any cabinet space to speak of, though, and the counter space is pretty tiny.
Like the rest of the apartment, the bathroom is design-forward, with custom mosaic tiling in a candy corn-like pattern. There's also a rainfall shower and a large medicine cabinet. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of storage space in here—there’s no vanity under the sink—so some shelves or a small, narrow cabinet might be useful.
The apartment is in the Jade Condominium, so named after Jagger redesigned the former manufacturing space’s interiors a few years back. The elevator building has a full-time doorman, a sundeck, a top-floor gym and sauna, and a penthouse lounge. Common charges are $565 a month. Taxes are $778 a month.
