Take It Or Leave It

Is this pet-friendly Hudson Heights apartment for $3,000 a month a find?

This $3,000 corner two-bedroom in Hudson Heights (the western part of Washington Heights) has prewar features, like a sunken living room and pretty decent closet space.

While the listing claims it's a two-and-a-half bedroom, we think that's pushing it. It looks more like a two-bedroom with a dining area to us. We suppose you could wall that off, but the apartment would be more enjoyable (and spacious) as a true two-bedroom.

The building has key-card laundry, elevator and a live-in super.  Pets up to 45 pounds are allowed.

The nearest train is the A, which  is great if you work at 59th Street (since it jumps from 125 to 59th), but can be less reliable on weekends. On the plus side, you're walking distance from Fort Tryon Park, one of the city's best kept secrets.

So is it worth relocating uptown? We asked our experts (and veteran renters), RentHackr founder Zeb Dropkin and freelance writer Lambeth Hochwald, to weigh in with me on this week's Take It or Leave It.

Size: Two-and-a-half bedroom, two bath
Location:  110 Bennett Avenue (at 186th)
Cost: $2,995
Flexible layout: Yes
Days on the market: 2
Subway: A at 181st Street

Pros and cons:

"Both bedrooms are king sized with two closets each (!), and the master bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom. I also like the sunken living room, since it differentiates the space.  On the con side,  it's apartment 2F, which means that it probably doesn't have much of a view and is likely lacking in the light department. And Hudson Heights doesn't have the conveniences and bustling city feel of other parts of Manhattan." —Lucy

"It’s a pretty nice, newly renovated, bright and big two-bedroom for $3,000. It’s in Hudson Heights, and you’ be forgiven for not knowing that's Upper Upper West side at 186th Street." —Zeb

"I’m pretty obsessed with this two-bedroom. There’s something cool about a step-down living room and this place looks as move-in-ready as we’ve seen. The downside is only the schlep to Midtown but, then again, if you’re ready to dip your toes into Washington Heights, this place is for you." —Lambeth

Who would this apartment be perfect for?

"A family with a dog that wants to stay in Manhatttan on a budget." —Lucy

"This place could be great for a family with one or two children, especially one that needs a car or two (and a place to park)." —Zeb

"A small family—perhaps couple and a baby; the layout would work best since the king-sized bedrooms (each of which has an en-suite bath) are right next to each other. And dog owners take note: You can have a pet in this apartment, provided it’s under 45 pounds." —Lambeth

The verdict(s):

TAKE IT "Check out the neighborhood first, obviously, but if you like it, I say go for it. It'll be hard to get more space for much less money in Manhattan." —Lucy

LEAVE IT "Unless you have friends nearby, you’re not going to run into any friends way up here. " —Zeb

TAKE IT "The price is right—and you’re a mere five blocks from the A express!" —Lambeth
