Emily Myers is a real estate writer and podcast host. As the former host of the Brick Underground podcast, she earned four silver awards from the National Association of Real Estate Editors. Emily studied journalism at the University of the Arts, London, earned an MA Honors degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and lived for a decade in California. In spite of her itinerant background, she has been living in the same Brooklyn rental since 2016.

A couple moving to New York City from Boston found a two-bedroom rental on the Upper East Side asking $5,500. Not only was this a 20 percent discount on the pre-pandemic rent of $7,200, the owner agreed to replace all the floors and shades.

Sponsor co-ops are typically rentals in buildings that were converted to co-ops in the 1970s or 1980s. Occupants who didn't buy were allowed to continue renting in the building. If the residents were in their 30s or 40s back then, they are now in their 70s and 80s.
