Emily studied journalism at the University of the Arts, London, earned an MA Honors degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and lived for a decade in California. In spite of her itinerant background, she has been living in the same Brooklyn rental since 2016.

According to roommate matching site SpareRoom, the average rent paid by a roommate in NYC reached $1,559 in the fourth quarter of 2022, compared to $1,294 at the same point the previous year. That's an increase of 20 percent year over year and it's the first time the average rent paid by a roommate has exceeded $1,500.
