Emily studied journalism at the University of the Arts, London, earned an MA Honors degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and lived for a decade in California. In spite of her itinerant background, she has been living in the same Brooklyn rental since 2016.

But Jim Bullock, co-owner of NY Fire Consultants and a former FDNY department chief, recommends sealing a dumbwaiter off with double layers of sheetrock. This will prevent a fire from spreading through the building via the dumbwaiter shaft—which occurred in a Park Slope townhouse recently.
