Back-to-school season is officially upon us, which means a lot of things: Your kids will be mercifully occupied during the day, the subways will be reliably packed with noisy teens every afternoon, and the urge to buy a bunch of brand new notebooks will be strong in all of us. It also means we'll be spending the week covering survival tips for families fitting themselves into NYC apartments, from finding a kid-friendly building to setting up a study space in small apartments to navigating the city's ever-daunting school system.
For most of us, this afternoon marks the official beginning of Labor Day weekend, and to make things, well, a little less laborious, we're heading out early. We'll be back on Monday with some light reading—and suggestions for movie bingeing—for those of you at your desks (or just sick of the great outdoors). We'll return to our regularly scheduled programming on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!
Is there anything more disheartening than going on a promising second or third date, only to find out the object of your affection lives three train transfers away—or worse, off the G train?
Finding a partner who's got a suitable apartment can feel close to impossible in this city, and in the interest of commiseration, comedian Matt Haze took to the streets to find out New Yorkers' biggest no-fly zones, and answer the age old question: Is it ever a good idea to date someone who lives in your building?
There's an old saw that looking for an apartment is a lot like looking for love, and well, it's not an exaggeration. (At least in our experience.) But what about once you've actually found love—or something like, it, anyway—and have to figure out how the nitty gritty of living with the person, and in a cramped NYC apartment, no less? Or worse, how to handle the crushing commute from your Bay Ridge studio to their Washington Heights abode?
NYC's real estate market may never rest (just like the Internet news cycle), but sometimes our editors need to. So we're taking it a little easy this week, but in lieu of hanging up a "Gone Fishin'" sign and calling it a day, we'll be re-posting our biggest (and most-read) stories of the year so far, along with a few fresh posts every day. Stay tuned to re-visit the Best of Brick, with stories on tracking down no-fee (and affordable) apartments, neighborhood guides, and more.
