If you’re in the market to buy a New York City apartment and need a place where you can skip the stairs or get away with making noise, a ground-floor apartment may be a good fit.

These apartments usually get a bad rap because they can lack privacy and natural light, but there are several perks to a place on the ground floor. For starters, they’re less expensive than units on higher floors. With no one living below you, you won’t have noise complaints if you play an instrument or have young kids running around. With a ground-floor unit, you get in and out of the building quicker and may have private outdoor space.

There are a few downsides to consider about living on the ground floor too. Brokers tell Brick that a well-maintained building is even more important because your place could be the entry point for bugs and mice. You also should consider if people can easily peek into your windows—or even break in.

So if you’re looking to buy a ground-floor apartment, check out these five options in Brooklyn Heights, Sunnyside, Jackson Heights, the Upper West Side, and the East Village.
