5 houses for sale in Rochester, NY, an affordable city with snowy winters
Rochester, New York, is an attractive place to live because of its affordability and access to nature—but you have to brace yourself for the city’s long, snowy winters.
It’s a prime real estate fantasy ground, says Mimi O’Connor, a Brick contributor who grew up in Rochester and visits her family there often. She says there’s a variety of housing styles including older places that have been well-maintained.
Many New Yorkers relocate here for the lower prices. The numbers prove that to be true: The median sales price is $160,000, according to Realtor.com. You also have a lot to choose from because there are about 150 single-family houses on the market now.
There’s no traditional downtown, but there are several distinct areas, O’Connor says. For example, Brighton and Pittsford are suburbs known for having good public schools. And neighborhoods like South Wedge and Corn Hill are within the city limits and have more of an urban vibe, she says.
When it comes to things to do, you have several options. Popular attractions include Eastman Museum (located on the estate of George Eastman, one of the founders of Kodak), The Strong National Museum of Play, and Memorial Art Gallery at University of Rochester (the city also has several colleges and universities). For a bite to eat, locals suggest Trata, Melo Coffee & Kitchen, Edibles, and Nick Tahou Hots (try the garbage plate).
For the outdoorsy types, there’s parks, biking trails, and nearby ski resorts like Bristol Mountain to enjoy in the winter. And since it’s on Lake Ontario, you can boat and swim in the summer.
