If you’re looking to buy an apartment and you’re priced out of New York City, nearby Jersey City is worth a look. It’s long been a destination for New Yorkers and the development boom over the last few years means you may have better luck landing a place of your own.

New Yorkers are drawn to the area’s affordability, says Diana Sutherlin, a broker at Compass in Jersey City. You can get much more space for your money compared to Manhattan, she says. The median listing price for property in Jersey City is $599,000 according to realtor.com—which is half the median listing price for a condo in Manhattan in the third quarter, according to the Elliman Report.

New Yorkers also like the fact that the area—where you’ll find streets lined with low-slung townhouses as well as new developments—doesn’t have a big-city feel, but it’s definitely not the suburbs either. There’s an urban feel but it’s still breathable, she says.

Jersey City also has several distinct neighborhoods, Sutherlin says. For example, Hamilton Park is often compared to Park Slope and attracts young families and artists. Exchange Place and Paulus Hook are popular among Wall Street executives who work in Downtown Manhattan.

The commute to NYC is quick via the ferry and New Jersey Transit, but you don’t have to leave to have city amenities. There’s a thriving dining scene with popular spots like Corto, Hamilton Pork, and 15 Fox Place. You’ll also find many locally-owned stores because of a restriction on chain stores downtown—but a Whole Foods is opening soon.

So if you’re thinking about leaving NYC, check out these five places for sale in Jersey City in The Heights, Waterfront, Hamilton Park, Paulus Hook and Historic Downtown.
