Madison, New Jersey, is one of the top suburbs that has long beckoned New Yorkers looking for more room. And like nearby Maplewood, another sought-after destination that the New York Times once described as “Brooklyn West,” these areas became even more desirable during the pandemic.

You could argue that you get the best of both city and suburb here: A lively, walkable downtown area, well-rated public schools, and outdoor amenities. Plus you don’t have to give up on the city entirely: You’re a 50-minute ride from Penn Station.

Downtown you find Madison Station, The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, Shakespeare Theater plus local stores and eateries like L’Allegria, The Prospect Tavern, and Osteria Trevi. Drew University, The Mall at Short Hills, and Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge are also nearby.

When it comes to buying a house here, the median sales price is $850,000, according to Realtor.com. Right now there are Colonials and new construction on the market, and many are within walking distance of downtown. Most houses have large backyards, garages, and space for a home office—all ideal if you’re still working from home.

So if living in Madison sounds like a fit, check out these five houses for sale in the area including a 1740-era two bedroom.
