If you want the space and privacy that comes with suburban-style living, you don’t necessarily need to leave New York City—or even to buy a house. You can find single-family houses for rent in the city that come with some or all of the trappings of suburbia, like backyards, basements, garages, and even porches.

Renting a house in NYC is likely cheaper than renting a house in the suburbs, where an owner’s high property taxes would be folded back into your rent. You’ll also still benefit from city amenities like public transportation and world-class cultural institutions without sharing a wall with your neighbors.

You can find detached houses in many neighborhoods around the city, but to have the most options, you should look in outer borough neighborhoods like Riverdale, Forest Hills, and Bay Ridge. These areas seem to have the most availability for house rentals on StreetEasy right now.

To help with your search, Brick found these five houses for rent in Port Richmond, Malba, Forest Hills, Riverdale, and Bay Ridge.

This three bedroom, two bath is listed for $2,700. The house has hardwood floors, arched doorways, ceiling fans, a dishwasher, sunroom, formal dining room, stone patio, one-car garage, basement, and backyard. Staten Island Zoo and Brooks Lake are nearby.
