If you’re thinking of escaping city life, Sussex County on the northern tip of New Jersey is a good place to consider. It’s considered an exurb (a fancy name for areas that are farther from cities than suburbs, and more rural). Sussex County offers well-rated public schools and lower taxes.

You can also get more space for less money compared to areas closer to the city (one of the main draws of exurbs). The median sales price is $347,500 according to Realtor.com. Most houses have large yards, so you get more privacy, and many have finished basements, decks, and garages.

The county is made up of several towns and boroughs including Andover, Franklin, Newton, Sussex, and Vernon Township. Some popular destinations in the area include Mountain Creek, Mountain Creek Water Park, High Point State Park, Green Valley Farms, and Space Farms Zoo and Museum. And it is about an hour-and-a-half drive from New York City.

To help with your search, Brick found these five houses for sale in Vernon, Newton, Stillwater, Hamburg, and Sparta.
