Thanks to its sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and local seafood restaurants, Martha’s Vineyard has long been known as a summertime destination. But in the past year, it’s seen an increase in people taking up full-time residency so they can enjoy the area’s vibrant scenery year round.

Just south of Cape Cod, the island is made up of six towns: Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, Chilmark, West Tisbury, and Aquinnah. Across the island, there are many places to enjoy nature: You can head to Katama Beach and Lucy Vincent Beach; the Aquinnah Cliffs; historic lighthouses including Gay Head Lighthouse; and nature reserves like Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and Long Point Wildlife Refuge.

For a bite (or a drink), you can check out popular bars and eateries like Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company, Offshore Ale, State Road, The Seafood Shanty, and Lookout Tavern. And for a bit of culture, you can head to Martha’s Vineyard Museum and Vincent House Museum & Gardens, check out the Oak Bluffs’ famous gingerbread houses, and visit the many local art galleries.

When it comes to buying a house here, you can find charming cottage-style houses for summer getaways and also larger spreads. There are waterfront houses, places within walking distance of both beaches and main streets, and those more secluded and surrounded by woods, all on the market now.
