6 heaters to warm your outdoor space through fall

If you’ve been taking advantage of outdoor space in your NYC apartment during the pandemic, heat lamps and portable heaters are a good way to extend the use of your backyard or balcony into the fall.
When investing in a exterior heat lamp, keep in mind New York City’s fire code bans any product with an open flame, including fire pits, patio fireplaces, chimineas, and even the trendy Solo Stoves. In addition, NYC's fuel gas code prohibits standard propane from being stored on a balcony or in a backyard unless you live in a single-family house.
You may still see New Yorkers using open flame heaters in their backyards but check your lease to see what’s allowed before you buy. Karen Davidson, a broker at Compass, says strict regulations prevent the use of many of the products popular in the suburbs, and the most common heaters used in the city are propane or electric.
Other considerations include the heat range of the lamp you’re buying. You can figure out if the heater will work for your space by checking out the BTU (British Thermal Unit) output or the wattage—the higher the number, the more space it will heat. Some products have different heat settings if you need more flexibility.
Brick Underground has rounded up some of the top picks for outdoor heaters. Keep in mind there’s a high demand for these products right now, so you might find low inventory levels.
