A Long Island City studio that doesn't feel like one room, for $835,000
Huge windows, high ceilings, and white walls make this 757-square-foot Long Island City studio, 2-17 51st Ave., #505, seem bigger than it actually is. Unlike a lot of studios, this condo also has a separate area that can be used as a home office or sleeping alcove. It also has a washer and dryer in the apartment. But at $835,000, the asking price is pretty steep—much more than the $640,000 median for a studio in LIC, according to StreetEasy.
The living space as it is configured now has room for a large TV area with a couch, a chair, and a coffee table, as well as a small circular dining table. The hardwood floors look new-ish, although this pattern—which mixes dark and light colors—definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste.
Just off the living room is the open kitchen, which has a stainless steel stove and refrigerator, a simple light-blue tiled backsplash, and a somewhat odd mix of white and dark-wood cabinets and drawers. There’s also a good-sized breakfast bar (with a pair of pendant lights above) that can be used for prep work or as a place for a meal.
Behind that is the sleeping area/home office, a 10-foot by 12-foot space that, at the moment, fits a full-sized bed, a couple of nightstands, and a small dresser.
The bathroom looks to be a nice size, and offers a mix of tan and off-white tiles, a wood vanity that seems like it’ll hold a lot, a long mirror, and a curtain on the tub—which will make it easier to bathe a small child or a pet.
The studio is in The Powerhouse, a converted condo in the former Pennsylvania Power Station building that was built in 1909 to provide electricity for trains, and closed in 1920. There are original details like steel beams. Amenities include a doorman, concierge services, live-in super, fitness center, spa with a whirlpool, sauna, steam and massage rooms, party room, game room, full-service garage, business center, lounge, screening room, bike storage, and rooftop deck with city views, BBQ grills, and picnic tables. Common charges are $571 a month. Taxes are $28 a month, thanks to a 421-a tax abatement that expires in 2024.
It’s near the 12-acre Gantry Plaza State Park, which has playgrounds, playing fields, a dog park, and occasional outdoor concerts.
It’s also close to a host of transportation options, including the 7 train at Vernon Blvd./Jackson Ave. and the G at 21st Street.
