Philadelphia gets a lot of good press about how it attracts New Yorkers looking for a better quality of life, plus more space for less money. It's no wonder, considering the median listing price in the City of Brotherly Love is a mere $224,000, according to Zillow, which means you can own a historic Federal-style or Georgian townhouse for much less than you would have to shell out to own an apartment in Manhattan.

Philadelphia also has one of the best culinary scenes in the country, world-class museums (the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Mutter Museum, the Barnes Museum, and the Franklin Institute, to name a few), some beautiful parks and gardens, and a bar where I once saw someone throw up on the floor and continue making out with his date, which takes real perseverance.

If you do defect to Philly, you'll be one of many—according to census data, about 27,000 people move from New York to Philadelphia each year. Here's a taste of what's available in town, should you desire to join them.
