One of my good friends lived in Minneapolis for many years before transplanting to New York, and he has been telling me how great it is and urging me to move there since the day I met him. I assumed he was just trying to get rid of me, until I did a little research into his hometown and saw what he was talking about.
Minneapolis, nicknamed "City of Lakes," is a beautiful city, replete with parks and (duh) lakes, hip eateries, a burgeoning arts scene, and the late artist Prince's haunts. It is frequently ranked one of the best cities for recent college graduates, thanks to its relatively low cost of living, and according to a recent WalletHub study, it's the 11th best big city in the United States (and the best in the Midwest).
The median sales price for Minneapolis is only $265,000 according to Trulia, making it a far more affordable (and bikeable!) alternative to Manhattan. Of course, like so many popular cities in the U.S., Minneapolis's real estate market is heating up, and a number of up-and-coming neighborhoods are seeing increased demand, so if you are considering a move, get it in gear. Here's a taste of what's out there.
1520 West 31st St., Uptown
This classic American foursquare-style house was built in 1908, and features gorgeous wooden pillars and detailing throughout. The kitchen has been outfitted with modern stainless steel appliances, there's a beautiful perennial garden in the front yard, and the house's design lends itself to some unique architecture in the upstairs bedrooms. The house is located near Minneapolis's Uptown commercial district, home to the Walker Art Museum and Bde Maka Ska lake, and famously where Prince got his start in music. It is priced at $569,900.

If you're looking for swankier urban digs, consider this two-bedroom, three-bath penthouse in Minneapolis's thriving downtown. The 1500-square-foot, three-floor property befits a large family or single person seeking a kingdom, thanks to its three fireplaces, two washer/dryer units, three ovens (???) and luxe chandelier in the dining room. There's also a roof deck and a second terrace, with sweeping views of downtown. The price is $1,999,000.
908 27th Ave. NE., Holland
Holland is quickly becoming one of Minneapolis's most enticing neighborhoods to buyers looking for a deal, thanks to its proximity to the Northeast Arts District, a hip section of the city full of funky bars, artist studios, and the popular Art-A-Whirl festival. This three-bedroom, one-bath house is located just a short walk from the celebrated Fair State Brewing Cooperative, whose IPAs would pair well with the well-lit kitchen and charming chandeliered dining room. Other highlights include the refinished maple floors and standalone garage. The price is $250,000.
