Once known for its tenement buildings and mom-and-pop stores, the Lower East Side looks a lot different today. Many of the older, walk-up buildings prevalent here have been overhauled (although you can still count on having to take the stairs) and new construction is rising as well. The mega development Essex Crossing will have over 1,000 new residences (to rent or buy) and over 450,000 square feet of retail space. It’s scheduled for completion in 2024.

In the meantime, here are five Lower East Side one bedrooms that you can rent in this ever-changing locale for under $2,400 a month.

127 Rivington St., #1D

This one-bedroom condo (also shown above) has exposed brick walls, dark hardwood flooring, a double closet in the bedroom, an open kitchen, and a windowed bathroom. The apartment can come furnished or unfurnished. It’s in a five-story walk-up building with a live-in super. Rent is $2,395 a month.

100 Allen St., #2B

Listed for $2,225 a month, this one-bedroom, one-bath apartment has a large living area and a separate pass-through kitchen. It’s located in a five-story walk-up building with a live-in super. No pets are allowed.

139 Eldridge St., #4

A one-bedroom rental, this apartment has two large built-in closets with overhead storage space, an open-plan kitchen, and a large bathroom with a soaking tub. It’s on the second floor of a walk-up building with a live-in super. Laundry is on the same floor. Rent is $2,150 a month.

95 Pitt St., #3

Listed for $1,950 a month, this one-bedroom rental has inlaid wood floors, a windowed bathroom, and a large bedroom. It’s located in a five-story building.

123 Ludlow St., #17

Priced at $2,395 a month, this one bedroom has exposed brick walls, windows in each room, a queen-sized bedroom, dark hardwood flooring, an open kitchen, and a windowed bathroom. The apartment can be rented furnished or unfurnished. Heat and hot water are included. It’s in a six-story building with a live-in super.
