The house has five bedrooms, and still has availabilities this summer.

With summer approaching at lightning speed, it's time to start planning warm-weather beach trips and stocking up on aloe gel. The Rockaways are a good local standby, but an even better plan may be to hightail it out of town for a week or two in favor of a fancy summer getaway spot that's not accessible via the A train. The Outer Banks, a 200-mile strip of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, is a bit of a trip, but the fishing and stunning beaches may make it worth your while.

Buying a vacation house is always an option, however aspirational—the median sales price in the region was $320,000 in 2017, according to realtor Brad Beachom—but the area is especially at risk during hurricane season, which makes a house a dicey investment. For a less intense commitment, vacation rentals are an option, and there are still some availabilities this summer, though they're surely booking up fast.

Consider for instance this five bedroom, three-bath house in the small Outer Banks town of Corolla, available during select weeks in June, July, and August for about $3,400 per week. The house is a five-minute walk from the beach, and if you're feeling lazy or want to cool down after a long day in the sun, there's a 12-by-24-foot pool out back.

The kitchen has a dishwasher, a microwave, a coffee pot, a breakfast bar with seating, and a toaster. It also comes with a crock pot.

The rental includes linens and towels, along with beach chairs, a grill, wifi, and central air. There is also a high chair, for families with young children. There is enough parking on the property for four to five vehicles, according to the listing.

Corolla is about an eight-hour drive from New York City. There are regular flights from New York to Norfolk, Virginia, which is about an hour and a half drive away.
