We recently rounded up some of our favorite temporary wall decals, perfect for adding a little (easily removed) style to a New York City apartment. An even bolder way to update your walls, and make a big statement in the process, is by installing a ready-made mural. Some are just peel-and-stick, and others are installed like wallpaper. Both kinds are an affordable option.

Yes, people pay thousands of dollars to have murals custom-painted on their walls, but you can achieve a similar look for a lot less with the store-bought kind. And yes, you can still get that "birch forest in fall" wall mural you may recall from your uncle's den back in the '70s or '80s, but there are many more options available now.

For the lover of tropical kitsch

Tropical Flamingo peel and stick mural, $209 on Etsy.

To step inside a pastoral painting

Painter Susan Harter's murals are printed on canvas to order. This one is "Cotswolds Mist." Price upon request at Susan Harter's website.

For an '80s vibe

Inky Blots, $89 at Joss & Main. No birch is involved.

For some '60s flair

David Nordahl's Faces and Trees Mural, $150 at Murals Your Way.

For the kid's room

Balloons Kingdom, $250 and up at Etsy.

For a coastal view

Coastal cirrus mural, $498 at Anthropologie.
