Applications are open for senior housing on Staten Island
Applications are open for 160 apartments for seniors on Staten Island through the city housing lottery.
The apartments are part of the new Sea View senior community under construction in the center of the borough, near the College of Staten Island. The available units are studios and one bedrooms, set aside for one- and two-person households making no more than $38,200 a year. Applicants must be 62 or older, or, for two-person households, have one person who is, and must qualify for a Section 8 housing voucher (for more info on the latter requirement, see our guide to rent assistance vouchers). Solo applicants must make no more than $33,400.
Those who end up in the apartments will pay just 30 percent of their income in rent.
The lottery apartments are going to be in two five-story residential buildings, which will be connected by underground passages with amenities. The buildings are described as having patios, laundry rooms, and on-site parking.
The buildings are part of a larger planned campus for seniors including healthcare facilities, housing, stores, community areas, and green space. The campus is set amid the island's Greenbelt park system, and about a mile and a half from stops for express buses that run into downtown and Midtown Manhattan.
Preference will be given to applicants with disabilities.
If you're interested and think you might qualify for an apartment, you can create a profile and apply online via NYC Housing Connect. Don't apply more than once, or you could be disqualified.
