Embrace your inner Edna Ferber in this lakeside Saratoga Springs ranch house
Coldwell Banker
Saratoga Springs, home to horse racing, unique tasting water, and the setting for Edna Ferber's 1941 novel Saratoga Trunk, is a great year-round destination. Though obviously the weather in Upstate New York has its, uh, moments, Saratoga is such a lively and picturesque little city it can feel welcoming through the winter. In the summer, the racing season and Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which serves as the summer home for New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, bring tourists and residents alike to town.
If you like horses, history, and exquisite architecture, consider this lakeside ranch house, on the market for $649,900.
The three bedroom, three-bath house was built on the eastern shore of Saratoga Lake in 1948. It has two kitchens, which is useful in lots of ways, including if one member of your household likes to cook a lot of fish. Both kitchens are outfitted with top-of-the-line appliances, and the main one is expansive.
The second one isn't so tiny, either.
The house's distinctive design also includes a light-filled open floor plan for the living room and one of the kitchens.
The dining room's French doors open into the rear family room, which opens onto a back patio.
The family room has a nice cathedral ceiling and gets quite a bit of sun. You are not required to keep that lamp.
The living room has romantic wood paneling and a brick fireplace.
Look at that view!
The bedrooms are cozy and have lovely views, as well.
One has a cute little secondary nook.
And though you'll have to (carefully) cross Route 9P to get to it, you do have access to the lake. It's not clear if you'd be able to build a dock on your section of the lakefront, but the owners of the houses on either side seem to have.
The lake house is about 15 minutes from the town proper.
Saratoga Springs is about a three-and-a-half hour drive from New York City. There's also an Amtrak station in town, and buses frequently make trips back and forth. Be sure to wave hi to the horses.
