This East Village rental offers three stories of NYC history for $22,500 a month
Sierra Residential
You'd be forgiven if this week's rental pick makes your head spin a bit: Spanning 3,500 square feet, the East Village apartment is listed by Sierra Residential for a whopping $22,500 a month, takes up three floors, and feels like several houses in one, with its interior design shifting from one room to the next.
The apartment is one of 11 units in a townhouse rental building built in 1900. The triplex is a four bedroom, three-and-a-half bath that was recently renovated and includes a very contemporary kitchen, central air, and surround sound, juxtaposed with historic features like elaborate wainscoting and two working fireplaces, and occasionally, some wacky carpeting and wallpaper.
The vast living room (see main image) looks large (and formal) enough to host ballroom dances, and is illuminated through multiple large windows. The eat-in kitchen looks sleek and of-the-moment, a striking contrast with the intricate millwork along the ceilings, and opens onto a backyard garden. A large dining room equipped with a marble fireplace is off the kitchen.
The apartment makes clever use of space, as in the storage shelves built into the staircase. On the top level, you'll find two of the bedrooms, including the master, which has built-in bookshelves and a walk-in closet—as well as some intense wallpaper and carpeting. The two bedrooms upstairs also have en-suite baths. We like the walk-in glass shower and subway tile in the first one pictured here.
The apartment has spaces, it seems, for any kind of gathering you might want to host: A literary salon in the library, say, or more of a rager in the basement den, equipped with a bar, or perhaps an al-fresco dinner in the yard (provided you tidy up the area a bit).
There's also a washer-dryer in the apartment, and a live-in super in the building.
