5 out-of-the-box summer escape destinations (when a regular cabin, hotel room or tent won't do)
It's Summer Shake-Up Week here at Brick Underground, and as such, we thought we'd present you with some out-of-the-box vacation destinations for those looking for a totally new experience.
Below, five hotel and house alternatives for a trip you'll remember.
The B-52s' Kate Pierson is the Kate behind Kate's Lazy Desert, a collection of six vintage airstreams that have been designed to "wacky perfection" by artists. Located in the California desert, each trailer accommodates two adults and costs $175 for weeknights and $200 per night for weekends. For those not willing to travel as far as the West Coast, the Catskills location of Pierson's Kate's Lazy Meadow offers cabins with the owner's signature funky, vintage decor.
If you, like us, always wanted a treehouse as a kid but never got one, this Atlanta treehouse could be the dream vacation spot for you. According to the listing, it's Airbnb's most wished-for listing worldwide. It has three rooms and is completely secluded amongst the trees. But it also happens to be minutes from downtown Atlanta. It's about $375 a night and fits two people, and there's still some availability for July and August, and even more come October.
For the truly adventurous traveler—who's not afraid of a long flight—this bamboo eco cottage in the middle of rice fields in Indonesia is a seriously luxurious way to feel both eco-friendly and one with nature. You can have up to four guests, and it costs just under $70 per night. Availability is slim in August but opens up in September.
If the idea of a vacation that's completely secluded appeals to you, but you'd rather not deal with the whole tent-pitching thing, this yurt on 80 acres (!) in Waterville, in upstate New York's Oneida County, may be just up your alley. At about $110 a night it's significantly more than a campsite, but it's also got running water, shelter from the rain and a cozy bed, which in our minds, are priceless.
Here's another option for those looking for more glamping than camping: A geo dome on a farm in the Catskills. Guests are required to BYOBed—air mattresses, camping air pads, sleeping bags, pillows and towels. There is a wooden floor in the dome and screen windows that offer an incredible view of the surrounding woods. There are outdoor double hot showers, a sink, and a claw foot bathtub. A complete outdoor kitchen and grill, fridge, sink, and big fire pit are available, too. It's about $350 a night, with lots of availability in July and August.
