May we suggest you gather some friends and head out to the Cape for July 4th weekend?
Even if you missed your opportunity to escape the city for Memorial Day weekend, there's still hope for the future, considering that this year July 4th weekend is, for many worker bees, a four-day holiday. Assuming you want to splurge and are willing to travel a little, we suggest booking this amazing historic six-bedroom, six-bathroom house in the small town of Cotuit, near Barnstable, Mass. Okay, we realize that at about $1,200 a night it's not cheap, but considering that it fits eight adults (plus up to six kids), we're talking as little as $150 a night (note: there's a three-night minimum).
Each bedroom features its own private bathroom, and there are five queen-size beds and four twin-size beds in total.
The Cape Cod house, which is less than 70 miles from Boston (you can drive or fly of course), is dog-friendly, on spacious grounds, and even includes a private hot tub, gazebo and deck.
Called the Josiah Sampson House, it dates back to the late 1700s, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
There's a family room with comfortable, vintage furnishings and a flatscreen cable TV, WiFi, a separate living area with an oversized fireplace (in case the evenings are chilly).
The super large country-style kitchen has lots of eating space and counter space, and a dishwasher for easy cleanup (there's also a washer and dryer in the house so you can get some loads of laundry done before heading back to your laundry-less NYC apartment). The dining room has a table for seven. For lunch, the gazebo provides a shady spot for a casual picnic.
As part of the rental, you also get acccess to the Kings Grant Racquet Club next door. And Loon Beach and South Cape Beach are both down the road. The VRBO listing also touts local a watering hole in Cotuit called The Kettle-Ho — "a reference to the original terms of sale for the land, which included a brass kettle and a garden hoe." Barnstable, Falmouth and Sandwich are all picturesque Cape Cod towns (with great seafood) that are just a few miles away.
