More affordable apartments are now up for grabs in the Sugar Hill neighborhood, at 369 Edgecombe Avenue and 801 St. Nicholas Avenue, both just north of West 150th Street. According to a listing posted on NYC Housing Connect, renters can apply for one of 16 newly-renovated studios, one, two, and three-bedrooms, provided their households earn either 50 or 60 percent of the area median income. Apartments start at $747 per month.

Both buildings are prewar, but the units listed here have been revamped; property amenities include an elevator, laundry room, and on-site resident manager. The location is appealing, too, with Jackie Robinson Park just a block away, and the A, B, C, D, and 3 train lines all within walking distance. Typically, these lotteries devote half the units to current residents of the neighborhood, but that preference isn't noted here; five percent of the apartments are set aside for municipal employees, however.

(Don't apply more than once, or you could wind up disqualified.)
