Apply now for grants of up to $3K for NYC community and school projects
If one of your new years resolutions was to be more civic-minded, now's your chance to act: The Neighborhood Grants program from the Citizens Committee for New York City is currently accepting applications for micro-grants of up to $3,000 to be awarded to community groups around the city for projects that will enrich local schools or the neighborhood at large.
The group's website notes that priority will be given to groups from low-income neighborhoods and Title I public schools, and that recent awards have been given to projects that have helped with access to healthy food, the creation of community gardens, tenant organizations and housing advocacy, and local recycling drives. (H/T to Uptown Collective for spotting the link.) You can check out a video explaining grant eligibility requirements below:
The Citizens Comittee also has details on upcoming information meetings, as well as application materials and sample applications, on their website. But you'll want to move quickly, as the deadline to apply is January 23rd.
If you're hoping to get more involved in your neighborhood but don't have a specific project that fits the bill, you can still consider starting a community garden (in advance of warm climes), or joining the local community board. You'll be one of many aiming to be a little more engaged in 2017.
