Escape pick of the week

A postcard-perfect house in a top suburban town. What else could you ask for?

Personal finance website WalletHub took an in-depth look at 2016’s Best Small Cities in America, and only one NYC-area town made the top-10 list: Princeton, New Jersey, which falls at number 2 (number 1, in case you're up for a farther "escape," is Westfield, Indiana).

If you're looking to relocate to that South Jersey town, it would be hard to find a house that's more picture-perfect than this $1.15 million five-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath house (which also happens to be about half the price of the average Manhattan apartment).

This seems ideal for New York City expats who are looking to go to the suburbs but appreciate a place in the heart of the action. (And Princeton, in case you've never been, is an adorable college town with lots of mom-and-pop shops and restaurants.)

The house has a large front porch, an eat-in kitchen with a view of the garden, a family room, dining room, and living room all downstairs. Bedrooms are upstairs.

There are decorative windows, and decorative patterned shingles that'll appeal to those who appreciate "vintage" design.

But living in one of the country's most desirable college towns is going to cost you. Annual property taxes are high, around $20,000.

Princeton is almost an hour and a half from NYC by car, though the New Jersey trains are faster to Penn Station.
