Southold, North Fork: This three-bedroom, two-bath has uninterrupted views of the bay, its own sandy beach, and a wraparound deck for outdoor entertaining and lazing. Rental price: $15,000 for August to Labor Day.

If you're anything like half of us here at Brick Underground, your summer calendar is far from being locked down—vacation rental included. But plenty of landlords don't have their summer tenants all lined up, either, offering rentals still available for the taking.

Still, there are some caveats to finding options at this late stage in the game: First, you'll need to be flexible when it comes to scheduling your booking. Most of the listings we found had weeks here and there open—with a few being available for entire months—so you'll need to be flexible. Second, you can't be too picky about locations—which isn't to say there aren't any properties available near the water. In fact, all the options we've collected here are shorefront, which means classic summertime fun—boating, swimming, fishing—is yours within minutes:

Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island

Wherever you are on Fire Island, you're practically next to the ocean, given how narrow this idyllic barrier island is. Nonetheless, this shingled contemporary in Ocean Bay Park is right on the water, yielding picture-perfect sunset views and super-quick access to the water. (OBP is also next to Ocean Beach, the retail- and restaurant-heavy town on the island.) There's plenty of room with four bedrooms, plus two-and-a-half baths, a mahigany deck and—this is key during the balmy month of August—central airconditioning. The house rents for $10,000/week, for a minimum of two weeks.

East Quogue, the Hamptons

At this price—$8800 from August to Labor Day—you won't be anywhere near oceanfront, but you will be right on the canal in Shinnecock Shores. (The East End blog 27East runs down the history of this charming enclave.) This cottage has three bedrooms, one bath, and a deep-water dock for seafaring renters, plus a deck for enjoying the outdoors.

Madison, Connecticut

Hammonasset Beach State Park is just a few miles east of this four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, but a trip there won't be necessary, as the water is right outside the door. Park a few chairs or a picnic blanket on the lawn outside to watch the regattas, or cozy up in the spacious living room or sun room. The house is still open for a few weeks in July and August for $457/night.

Misquamicut, Rhode Island

This two-bedroom, one-bath just across the street from the beach on a beloved stretch of Rhode Island near Watch Hill—aka, Taylor Swift land (the pop star owns a house there, and was seen cavorting on its shores)—is asking $286/night, sleeps six, and has a few weeks open in August.

North Truro, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

You can't get more waterfront than this three-bedroom, three-bath asking $595/day. A patio area and a deck work well for entertaining; there's an outdoor shower, too.
