Dancer Brian Flynn loves his rooms with a view most (and his friends in the building)

Modern dance company RIOULT Dance NY is performing at the Joyce Theater this week (tickets are available here). The group has a reputation for performing sensual, articulate and musical works, and this year they're performing two programs: Women on the Edge (examining the role of women in times of conflict) and a second program that comprises Polymorphous (a piece exploring the subjectivity of perception), Duets (a suite of duets from some of Pascal Rioult's finest dancest) and two repertory works.
We caught up with dancer Brian Flynn ahead of the event to find out which dance clubs he misses, his favorite way to get around (besides dancing), and more:
1. What neighborhood do you live in?
I live in Chelsea.
2. Is this your dream neighborhood or is there someplace else in NYC you’d prefer to settle in?
I love living in Chelsea, it is central to everything and has a real neighborhood feel.
3. Do you own or rent?
My partner and I own the apartment.
4. How'd you find it?
Through a broker. We had been looking for a two-bedroom for over a year and we loved Chelsea so we wanted to stay in the area. We had looked at a lot of other two-bedrooms in neighboring areas but nothing really fit the bill in what we wanted for a neighborhood. We also loved our building so, when a two-bedroom came on the market we pounced on it. (The building has only 36 units and only so many of them are two-bedrooms.)
5. What’s the one thing you love the most about it?
The views, the residents (which some are now dear friends), and the amenities. From our apartment we have views of the Empire State Building. We can see the lights of Times Square and a little bit of Jersey! We are very lucky for having a gym and an indoor swimming pool and spa.
6. If there’s one thing you could change about your apartment, what would it be?
A full-time chef! Lol! Sorry, would not change a thing!
7. In three words, describe the first apartment you've ever lived in.
Small, dark, loud! (I lived across the street from the subway, which was above ground. It was the last stop on the subway for Manhattan. It was a very long commute everyday to work.)
8. Do you dream of old New York or prefer the current version?
I miss some of my old haunts, bars, restaurants. There are some old-dive Mexican restaurants that my good friends use to work at, also, some great old dance clubs—Roxy, Splash, Limelight—but I do love that the city seems cleaner.
9. Tell us about the favorite apartment you’ve ever had.
The one I am in!
10. And the worst?
Severely cockroach infested that I had to spray roach killer around my mattress so they would not come into bed with me!
11. Name one NYC service you couldn’t live without.
Subway. I am lucky that I can usually walk to work but sometimes I work in Brooklyn or uptown and the subway is always the fastest. I love that it runs at all time of the night and it stops right below my building!
12. What's your favorite spot in the city?
Any rooftop terrace with a view! The skyline is so beautiful!
13. Which would you rather: Brooklyn brownstone or a penthouse in a shiny, new condo?
Penthouse (see above! views!).
14. If you could live elsewhere, where would it be?
Anywhere where there is a warmer climate! I love a pool all year long!
15. Any advice for a recent New York transplant?
Experience it all and you will figure it out!! New York is such a vast yet small place. There are always new places to see, eat and shop. It's always changing and evolving. The more one experiences it, the more it gives back. It has something for everyone and the people are fascinating.
