A luxury penthouse for international men and women of mystery
This co-op is a play land for one-percenters: the 8-room penthouse, listed for $7.75 million represented by Brown Harris Stevens, looms over the East River and the United Nations campus. A duplex, the apartment is at 870 United Nations Plaza, one of two glassy towers packed with amenities that include 24 hour doorman and concierge service, a garage, a gym, golf, and Pilates room, and a roof deck to take in 360 degree views. The price tag, plus its location beside the UN headquarters, makes this space seem tailor-made for—and only affordable to—global moguls, visiting dignitaries or international jet setters.
A spiral staircase and private elevator connect the two levels of the home. River views abound, and there's a room currently used for billiards (any international player worth his or her salt knows how to shoot some pool.)
The eat-in kitchen is decked out for entertaining. The stainless steel appliances—which include a six-burner stovetop, two commercial ovens, and massive dishwasher, fridge, and freezer—are made for cooking for large parties. One of the two staircases connects to a staff room, so you’re all set if you want a live-in chef.
There are four full bedrooms and five and a half baths; one of the bedrooms is off the living room on the 37th floor, and the rest are on the 38th. The master suite is a corner room with massive windows facing south and east, though we only get a partial look at this space, and no photos of the others—we’d be very curious to see how they, and the bathrooms, stack up.
The tower, built in 1966, is considered a New York classic, its architecture designed to reflect its rather imposing surroundings. It’s all a bit sedate for us, but still an extremely swank spot for high rolling globe trotters to hang their hats.
