Dream eat-in kitchens that give the whole family a place to start (and end) the day

For most Americans, a family meal in an eat-in kitchen is as fairly unremarkable occurrence, but for a New Yorker who typically whips up breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners in spaces the size of closets, it’s the stuff of dreams. In honor of the start of school—and as an early peek into next week's Back-to-School theme—we dedicated this week’s column to the eat-in kitchen: the ideal spot to sip a smoothie, enjoy a yogurt parfait or down a slice of toast “en famille” before the chaos of the day takes hold.

This “classic 9” (that’s four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths) at 333 East 57th Street has a dining room that can accommodate 20, but for intimate meals, nothing beats the cozy kitchen with a center island for quick snacks, and a table and chairs for family dining. Snap it up for $3.75 million.

As if five floors, 16 rooms (including seven bedrooms) and five baths weren’t enough, the garden-level kitchen of this Brooklyn Heights townhouse (yours for $15 million) features a center island big enough for small meals and plenty of space left over for a generously-sized dining table.

Lofts aren't usually described as having eat-in kitchens—how do you eat-in in an open space?—but this 6,000-plus-square-foot condo does a pretty good job, tucking a banquet seating area next to the chef’s kitchen and behind a line of original steel columns. The rest of the condo, located at 140 Franklin Street in Tribeca and priced at $30.5 million, doesn’t disappoint with two master suites, four additional bedrooms, four baths, a karaoke/music room and a wood burning fireplace.

There are rooms aplenty to dine in within this six-story, single family Carnegie Hill townhouse (priced at $15.9 million), including a formal dining room and a separate breakfast room. But we think this country-style kitchen, complete with an elongated island that seats seven, is the perfect place to start (and even end) the day.

This 10-room (five bedroom!) Park Avenue duplex co-op (for sale at $9.5 million) has a windowed eat-in kitchen with three sinks, an oversized Sub-Zero fridge, an arched nook that houses a six-burner Viking stove-oven-grill and hood, and an L-shaped banquet and table for intimate family repasts.

This sunny eat-in is the perfect spot for kids to grab a bite while parents (or the resident chef) whip up healthful meals. It’s located in a two-floor, 10-room penthouse with 63 windows and four exposures at 18 Gramercy Park South (yours for $49.75 million).
