Short on space? This foldable lounger is a sleek solution
If there’s one thing virtually all New York City apartments lack, it’s extra space, so furniture that takes up little to no room is a godsend. That’s why these clever folding furnishings—the creations of Andrea Kordos and Tony Round, two Toronto-based architects with an appreciation for beautiful, minimalist and practical furniture—are so appealing.
Inspired by papercraft, the duo’s first pieces of folded furniture include a sculptural shelf and a modern lounger. The Flip Shelf is a plywood ledge that lies flat against the wall when not in use (and doubles as a lighting source thanks to an optional LED light). The Origami Chair, a nest-shaped shell made of plywood panels and connected by piano hinges, perches atop an elegant steel frame to create a comfortable spot for sitting.
With 20 days to go, Cut & Fold Modern Furniture has already reached its Kickstarter fundraising goal of $3,300 CAD, or $3,015 US (which will allow the architects to exhibit their work at the upcoming 2015 Interior Design Show in Toronto), but you can continue to support the project. A pledge of $725 CAD ($662.46 US) will get you an Origami Chair with solid color laminate finish from the company’s first production run. A pledge of $150 CAD ($137.06 US) will get you a Flip Shelf in laminate finish, including the LED. Expect delivery in spring 2015.
