Broad City: A TV show that actually gets the apartment hunt right

The irony of looking for an apartment in New York City: sometimes it’s so wild and awful it feels like you’re in a sitcom, and yet most TV shows get the experience woefully wrong. (We’re looking at you, Mindy.) So when pop culture actually captures that authentic blend of despair and black comedy, we’re totally in.

And thus, “Broad City,” the Comedy Central laugh-fest starring Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer inspired by the duo’s web series of the same name.

A few episodes ago, Abbi—fed up with her roommate’s obnoxious boyfriend, who has a habit of pleasuring himself on her couch and eating her cheese—decides to move out. She enlists raunchy real estate agent Pam (played by Amy Sedaris in a neck brace), who takes her on a tour of some truly dismal, albeit pretty realistic, potential rentals. (In one dingy little room, Abbi asks where the bathroom is, to which Pam replies, “Where isn’t the bathroom?!”).

Yesterday, New York Magazine’s “Vulture” blog scored a previously unreleased outtake in which Abbi and Ilana are testing out the precariously positioned loft bed in “a pre-war building built right after the Iraq War.” For anyone who’s ever slept in a loft bed, we feel your pain.
