StreetEasy’s Most Wanted: Blasts from the past with prewar details
If you’re a sucker for old-world charm, you might be looking to settle down in a prewar apartment. This week's roundup of StreetEasy’s Most Wanted -- the 10 sales listings StreetEasy users saved more often than any others -- features a host of apartments with prewar details such as beamed ceilings and old-fashioned fireplaces.
A $1.895m two-bedroom co-op "with condo bylaws" on Duane Street between West Broadway and Church Street in Tribeca is complete with a wood-burning fireplace and French doors leading to a balcony off the living room (pictured). The loft also has 14’ wood beamed ceilings and cast iron columns. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels in one corner of the living room can be enclosed to create an additional bedroom or office (and give a more modern feel to the 1920s apartment). Pets are allowed, and there's a video intercom system in place of a doorman.
Prewar details and nice views are the draw for a two-bedroom co-op on West 12th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Greenwich Village. The $1.495m unit looks picture perfect to us: It's recently renovated, with original details such as 10’ ceilings, French doors, a wood-burning fireplace and classic bathroom fixtures were retained. Views over the Village to the Empire State Building complete the package. The building doesn't have a doorman (there's a live-in super) and the apartment only has one bathroom, but the $1,386 maintenance may be worth a line to the bathroom now and then.
On the UWS, a prewar $1.325m two-bedroom co-op features beamed ceilings. The unit is located on West 77th off Central Park West and the formal dining room with a built-in Murphy bed can become a third bedroom. There’s also a windowed, eat-in kitchen with marble countertops and stainless steel appliances, as well as two windowed baths. W/D and pets are permitted.
If prewar’s not your style, don’t despair. Consider a two-bedroom condo on Third Avenue between East 90th and 91st Streets for $685k. This unit comes with a (very modern) wall-mounted 50” plasma TV and custom window shades. The windows offer views of the East River and major utilities are included in the $682 common charges. Plus, the building itself offers an on-site health club with a lap pool (NYSC) and discounted membership for residents, as well as full valet services and an on-site parking garage.
